Scientist / Senior Scientist, Functional Genomics

  • We are seeking a creative, highly motivated, responsible and dynamic Scientist / Senior Scientist to join our R&D division to contribute to high-impact and fast-paced research and drug discovery.
  • This position is a full-time position in the company’s San Diego headquarters. 

Specific Responsibilities

  • Lead the identification and characterization of novel targets and mechanisms of tissue degeneration and disease (including, but not limited, to oncology, neuroscience, musculoskeletal, immunology, etc.).
  • Lead the application of leading-edge precision genome editing technologies for accelerated target evaluation.
  • Develop and execute genome-wide and/or targeted perturbation screens and combine with chemical perturbation phenotypes to develop actionable mechanistic hypotheses for novel target classes, chemical modes of action, and disease treatment strategies.
  • Develop appropriate in vitro biochemical, molecular and cell-based assays and in vivo models to investigate multiple cellular processes and phenotypes.
  • Interact routinely with Samumed’s Bioinformatics team to integrate knowledge and develop an understanding of complex biological systems
  • Develop mechanism of action hypotheses for genes and chemicals of unknown function to identify and validate ‘druggable’ targets”
  • Develop knowledge of and make recommendations about future applications of targets classes.
  • Engage in data analysis, presenting results, and working collaboratively with others to achieve objectives and timelines
  • Analyzing and documenting experimental data in electronic notebooks in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with the company rules
  • Presenting scientific data to colleagues and assisting in the preparation of internal and external presentations (oral, posters, and publications)
  • Manage 1-2 Research Associates as required


  • Ph.D. in Biological Sciences or related field with at least 3+ years of post-doctoral training and/or 3+ years of pharmaceutical/ biotechnology industry experience.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in human genetics, functional genomics and deep molecular phenotypic profiling for drug discovery.
  • Broad knowledge of Cellular Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, assay development.
  • Proficiency in mammalian cell culture, cellular, molecular assays and genetic as well as chemical perturbation screens.
  • Working knowledge of data analytics platforms and enabling computational biology tools preferred.
  • Experience working with bioinformaticians a plus.
  • Working knowledge of in vivo pharmacology preferred.
  • Proven track record of scientific contributions in chemical biology and functional genomics as evidenced by quality and quantity of publications and presentations.
  • Proven ability to collaborate in a team environment and work independently.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Outstanding organizational and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to provide novel creative solutions to challenging problems. Desire to learn and tackle new challenges and initiatives.
  • Level will be commensurate with experience
