Scientist / Senior Scientist, Systems Biology

  • We are seeking a responsible, dynamic, creative and highly motivated Scientist / Senior Scientist to join our R&D division to contribute to preclinical research and discovery.
  • This position is a full-time position in the company’s San Diego headquarters. 

Specific Responsibilities

  • Lead the identification and characterization of novel targets and mechanisms of tissue degeneration and disease, especially due to aging and injuries
  • Develop appropriate in vitro biochemical assays, cell-based assays and in vivo models to investigate multiple cellular processes and phenotypes
  • Designing and executing studies with appropriate animal models (mouse/rat)
  • Interact routinely with Samumed’s Bioinformatics team to integrate knowledge and develop an understanding of complex biological systems
  • Develop deep understanding of biology in the context of Samumed’s Musculoskeletal and Neuroscience priorities using appropriate experimental, analytical and systems biology approaches
  • Assist team members in integrative experiments that measure the biological response of in vitro and in vivo systems to pharmacological modulation
  • Engaging in data analysis, presenting results, and working collaboratively with others to achieve objectives and timelines
  • Efficiently managing scheduling of studies, and managing own time to complete assigned work by due date
  • Manage 1-2 Research Associates as required
  • Analyzing and documenting experimental data in electronic notebooks in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with the company rules
  • Presenting scientific data to colleagues and assisting in the preparation of internal and external presentations (oral, posters, and publications)


  • Ph.D. in Biological Sciences or related field
  • PhD with at least 2+ years of post-doctoral training or pharmaceutical/ biotechnology industry experience.
  • Deep knowledge and experience in Systems Biology, especially of the Musculoskeletal System and/or the Nervous System preferred
  • Broad knowledge of Cellular Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Histology Imaging and in vitro assay development
  • Proficiency in mammalian cell culture and associated techniques
  • Experience with musculoskeletal, neurobiology and/or degenerative disease animal models, dosing (IP, IV, PO, SC), behavioral measurements and tissue harvesting required
  • Publication record is highly desirable
  • Managerial experience is plus but not required. Proven ability to collaborate in a team environment and work independently
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Outstanding organizational and critical thinking skills
  • Must have strong work ethic, able to multi-task, detail-oriented and enthusiastic for laboratory work
  • Must be a team-player, punctual and reliable, dependable and flexible in adapting to change in a multi-disciplinary, fast-paced work environment
  • Level will be commensurate with experience
